| 356 | In 1841 and 1851 John Soutter or Souter lived in a farm called Craigsanquhar near Kilmany. Still in existence today, the farm has 198 acres. In 1851, Isabel Willie or Wylie stayed with them, aged 80. John was a farmer. In 1861 John Soutter was at a farm called Chapel of Lochore near Ballingry. This was taken over by the mining industry and the place is now Lochore Meadows Country Park. John and his wife are buried in Warriston Cemetery, grave no.407.5 - no stone traced. His death certificate in Edinburgh is 685/2/384 and reads : John Soutter, farmer retired, m.to Jean Kilgour, died 4.7.1879 aged 75, son of James Soutter (Wright, Master) and Lillias Soutter M.S.Mitchell, signed by John Soutter (son). | Soutter, John (I0033)

| 382 | James Aikenhead of the firm of Aikenhead and Crombie , hardware merchants, was born in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1817, being fourth in a family of eleven children. His father, Thomas Aikenhead, was born in Kilkenny; he was a bookseller and stationer , and died in 1859. His mother was Eliza Beal, born in Thomastown, County Kilkenny; she died in her native country. Mr. Aikenhead learned the trade of a cabinetmaker and worked at it for ten years; then he learned the hardware business from his uncle's establishment in Kilkenny. In 1849 he came to Canada and settled in Toronto, where he became employed in the establishment of Ridout, Bros, Inc. He afterwards became a partner in the business with Joseph and Percival Ridout and A.T. Crombie. The Ridouts eventually retired, leaving the business in the hands of Messrs. Aikenhead and Crombie. This is from an interview with Thorpe Wright, printed in the Toronto Globe in 1923. In "William Armstrong and His Descendants", dates are given as 1808 - 1897. The month of June is a guess, based on calculation from his age at death. 1861 Census. All are born in Ireland except Richard. This fixes the year of immigration as ca. 1850.
