4. James Howard Johnstone McKemmie was born on 13 Jul 1936 in Roodlands Hospital, Haddington, East Lothian. (son of James Burns McKemmie and Allison Pollard Soutter); died on 15 Dec 1990 in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh.. Notes:
worked as Engineer/ Fitter at Blackford Hill Royal Observatory in Edinburgh and then as a laboratory technician at Nuclear Physics Dept. Edinburgh University, Kings Buildings, Edinburgh. Cigarette smoker for most of his life, this was a contributory factor in his comparatively early death. He was fairly overweight and balding from his twenties. He had few hobbies or interests, tending to stay at home and watch TV after his work. He was rarely off work. He had a back problem and lay on a board to cure it for about ten weeks in his early fifties. He went to Knox Academy in Haddington, Morningside Primary in Edinburgh, and Darroch Secondary School. He left school with only a certificate in technical drawing and went to work in a surgical instrument shop near the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh at sixteen. He then got an apprenticeship at Ferranti Engineering in Robertson Avenue in Edinburgh. He became a metalworker and technician. He was about 5 foot eight inches and around 13 stone. He had a round face type and black hair which went grey around the fringes. His first car was a Ford Prefect, his second a Ford Cortina, his third a Ford Escort and his fourth a Peugeot 309.

Worked with British Linen Bank and Bank of Scotland. Fought in World War 1and was gassed and blinded. In Home Guard in World War 2. Lived at 23, Braid Avenue, Edinburgh. Went to Knox Academy in Haddington. Was a Mason.

He was a radio and television engineer and had his own shop in Eyre Place, Edinburgh. He owned a quarter share in a light aircraft and was a member of the flying club based at Turnhouse Airport outside Edinburgh. He was killed about a week after he retired when his plane crashed in Kent, England. He lived at 15, Bellevue Street, Edinburgh top flat right.
George married Sarah Ann Morrison in 1932. Sarah (daughter of Thomas Aitken Morrison and Mary Percy Hymers) was born in 1903 in Dunstan, Co.Durham.; died in Jan 1944. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
