Bill Campbell Family and History
The Genealogy of the Campbell Family
John Herbert 'Bert' Campbell
1892 - 1967 (75 years)1. John Herbert 'Bert' Campbell was born on 10 Mar 1892 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada (son of Nathaniel Campbell and Margaret Jane Armstrong); died on 22 Sep 1967 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Notes:
William Armstrong and his Descendants (1979), p. 50:
"John Herbert Campbell was born in Toronto, Ont., and received his education at
Barrie, Ont. He worked as chief clerk for the Canadian Railway Company. Bert
nade his home in Barrie and Gravenhurst, Ontario, and in Alsask, Saskatchewan,
and in Calgary, Lethbridge, and Edmonton, in Alberta. He enjoyed the hobbies
of painting and golf. In 1934 Bert Campbell married Margaret Dudgeon Grieve.
"Margaret D. Grieve was born in 1902 in Glasgow, Scotland. She has four
sisters and one brother. Margaret Campbell has always enjoyed sewing and
handwork.
"Bert and Margaret had two daughters, Joyce and Audrey. John Herbert Campbell
passed away in September, 1967, at Edmonton, Alberta. Margaret now makes her
home in Calgary, Alberta."
1901 census gives birth as March, 1891, in Toronto.
Index of Ontario births gives birth date as 10 Mar 1892. Registration number
is 901249, registration year 1931. Birth record should be on reel 1887236; not
yet known why birth was registered so late.

Children:
2. Nathaniel Campbell was born on 12 Feb 1853 in Erin, Ontario, Canada; died in 1926 in Alberta, Canada. Notes:
1901 Census gives date of birth as Feb. 1851; Maggie Comley's Birthday Book
gives date as 2-12. Thus birth date is assumed to be 12 Feb 1851. However,
none of the ages given in various censuses agree with this birthdate: 18 in
1871, 28 in 1881, 49 in 1901. Also, this date makes him older than his older
brother John. It seems more reasonable to assume his year of birth was actually
1853. This also agrees with marriage record (see below) which has him 26 yrs
old on 15 Sep 1879.
1881 Census: age 28, profession Carder
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriage record (viewed at Family History Centre in Winnipeg, reel 1869504,
record no. 003142) gives
age: 26
residence when married: Erin Village, Ont.
place of birth: Erin Village, Ont.
profession: woolen manufacturer
There is a town of Erin in Wellington Co, ON, northwest of Guelph. This
birthplace conflicts with the entry "Bruce" (presumably Bruce Co.) on the 1901
census.

In addition to farming, Nathaniel operated the local Post Office out of his
home. He designated the PO as 'Nathella'. The "Post Offices and Postmasters"
database at ArchiviaNet lists the Nathella post office in the Federal electoral
district of Medicine Hat, AB, with Nathaniel Campbell appointed as postmaster
1915-01-01 until 1918-05-31, when the office was closed. The location of the
office was 24-26-1-W4.
This region of Alberta is known as Acadia (Acadia Valley Municipal District). A
local history called "Times to Remember" has been published for this area, but
apparently does not mention the Campbells.
Nathella is listed in an Alberta place names index
(http://www.rootsweb.com/~canab/places/placesn.html) in Acadia County,
24-26-1-W4.
Also listed on page 572 of Wrigley's 1922 Alberta Directory and Year Book:
"a farming settlement and former P.O. in Alexandra Prov. Elec. Div., 10 miles
southwest of Alsask, which is on the C.N.R. main line and is the nearest C. N.
Tel., C. N. R. express and business and banking centre."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nathaniel Campbell is listed in Edmonton Cemetery, Section I, Block 76, Plot
0006. In plot 0005 is Margaret Campbell. Apparently there is a single
headstone, with "Nathaniel 1852-1928" and "Margaret Jane 1857-1934" (and also a
note of some kind about "Nathaniel Mervin", not clear if he is buried there).
However, interment dates are 12/21/35 for Margaret and 12/14/54 for Nathaniel.
The year 1935 may be a transcription error, but the 1954 date seems to imply
that Nathaniel was moved here from some other cemetery.

Margaret (daughter of William Armstrong and Margaret Strain) was born on 18 Dec 1857 in Markdale, Ontario, Canada; died on 19 Dec 1934 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; was buried in Edmonton Cemetery, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
3. Margaret Jane Armstrong was born on 18 Dec 1857 in Markdale, Ontario, Canada (daughter of William Armstrong and Margaret Strain); died on 19 Dec 1934 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; was buried in Edmonton Cemetery, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Other Events and Attributes:
- Reference Number: 4
Notes:
From William Armstrong and his Descendants:
"Margaret Armstrong was the second daughter of William and Margaret Armstrong
and was born and raised in Markdale. She was married to Nathaniel Campbell and
the couple resided for some time in Flesherton where Mr. Campbell carried on
operations in the woolen mill business, and subsequently at Wiarton, Thornbury
and Barrie. While residing in the latter place, Mr. Campbell decided to take
up farming in the Canadian West and settled at Alsask, Saskatchewan, where his
family joined him after the completion of settlement duties. After the death
of Mr. Campbell in 1926, the family moved to Calgary where they resided until
Mrs. Campbell's death.
"Mrs. Campbell was a lifelong Methodist, and later member of the United Church.
She died at the home of her daughter, Nathella, Mrs. M. L. Seller, at Edmonton
when on a visit at Christmas. 'Her qualities of mind and heart endeared her to
husband, children, sisters, and brothers.'"
According to Margaret (Seller) Minogue, Margaret Jane died of pneumonia at the
age of 76, and is buried in Edmonton Cemetery.
The City of Edmonton cemetery web page
(http://www.gov.edmonton.ab.ca/co
mm_services/rec_facilities/cemeteries/search.html) lists four Margaret
Campbells; the one buried Dec 21, 1935 is the only possible match. Dec 21 is
reasonable, but 1935 is two years late - maybe a transcription error.
Maggie Campbell's Birthday Book indicates her birthday was Dec 18, year not
specified.
Age in censuses: 1871 - 13, 1881 - 23, 1901 - 43. These ages suggest 1857 as
the year of birth. Also consistent with marriage record (see below).
1901 Census states she was born Dec 1856; but this is impossible if her sister
Elizabeth's birthdate is correct.
----------------------------------------
Headstone (see notes for Nathaniel) says "Margaret Jane 1857-1934".
Obituary is in The Edmonton Journal of December 20,1934 - states she died Dec
19, 1934, and lists children Helen of Calgary, Mrs. M.L. Seller of Edmonton,
J. Herbert of Calgary, N. Mervin of Edmonton and Wilfred A. of Rochester, N.Y.
[This thanks to Cheryl Maxwell - I haven't seen the obit myself.]

6. William Armstrong was born on 17 Dec 1826 in Co. Monaghan, Ireland; died on 4 Jan 1913 in Markdale, Ontario, Canada. Other Events and Attributes:
- Reference Number: 1
- Emigration: 1846, Markham, Ontario, Canada
Notes:
Born "near the old town of Clones, Ireland".
"William Armstrong and His Descendants", p. 1, quotes the Markdale Standard,
Sept. 1912, stating that William crossed from Liverpool to New York in 1846, a
passage taking 5 weeks. On p. 3 it is stated that his brother Mark and Mark's
wife Elizabeth accompanied him on this voyage.
The ship St. George, under master Watson Ferris, sailed from Liverpool to New
York, arriving about 2 Dec 1846 (see Sources). The passenger manifest lists
among the steerage passengers
Mark Armstrong 30 Male Farmer
Betsey Armstrong 24 Female
William Armstrong 20 Male Farmer
There is a big discrepancy here in Mark's age. He should have been 42 years
old in 1846, if his birth date was 1804. Also, he and Elizabeth are supposed
to have married in 1828; if she was 24 in 1846 she would have been only 6 in
1828.

Joined Methodist Church at age 23 (previously Presbyterian).
"Markdale and Flesherton", p. 86, states that he died "April 24, either 1887 or

printed in the Toronto Globe in 1923. In "William Armstrong and His
Descendants", dates are given as 1808 - 1897. The month of June is a guess,
based on calculation from his age at death.
