Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Denis (Dinny) Doherty was born on 24 Oct 1886 in Mackey's Station, Renfrew Co; was christened in 1886 in Mackey's Station, Renfrew Co (son of Dennis Dougherty and Margaret ' Ann' Whalen); died in 1950 in Montreal, Que; was buried in 1950 in Montreal, Que.

    Notes:

Denis was a Brakekman for the CNR. Prior to his marriage he worked as a lumberman in the Pem broke area. He was renowned for his ability to 'hold his own' with the other lumberjacks, i n particular with Big Jo' Montferand. One day, while he and Jo were engaging in a friendl y game of fisticuffs at a local drinking establishment, someone decided that it was time to c all in the local police detachment. By the time the whole brawl was over Denis had punche d a gaping hole in the wall, and had taken on six law enforcers. When he was finally brough t to the jail house, the constable on duty asked him if he would like to join the force, as t hey would rather have him working for them than against them. From that day on, he was know n in the Ottawa Valley as 'Bad Dinny' ...and according to my Dad, I run true to form, so tha t is how I got my nickname. Some things just run in families, don't they?

Denis married Mary Kearney in May 1926 in Cochrane, Ontario. Mary (daughter of William Kearney and Margaret Kearney) was born about 1888 in Pembroke, Ontario; was christened about 1888. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Dennis Dougherty was born on 20 Dec 1844 in Province of Quebec; was buried in Pembroke Catholic Cemetery, Ont.

    Notes:

There is some doubt about Dennis's birthplace. Two Ontario censuses, 1881 and 1901,show hi s birthplace as Quebec. The death registration of his son Joseph shows a place called Rodd en/Rawdon, either US or NS...the writing is not clear. There are Rawdon towns in Quebec, No va Scotia and Pennsylvania. The family has been told over the years that he emigrated from Ir eland, and so the search continues. A request to the Quebec Government for vital statisti c information has not yet been answered. The mystery still waiting to be solved.

Dennis married Margaret ' Ann' Whalen about 1878 in Mackey's Station, Ontario. Margaret was born on 4 Aug 1857 in Mackey Station, Renfrew Co, ON, CAN; was christened in Mackey Station, Renfrew Co, Ont; died in Pembroke, ON, CAN; was buried in Catholic Cemetery, Pembroke, Ontario.
