51 "Markdale and Flesherton, A Written Heritage", p. 86, says only that Joseph
Strain's fourth daughter married Frederick Armstrong - no first name given.
Also says 'Mrs Frederick Armstrong' is buried beside her parents in Flesherton
Cemetery. See notes for Joseph Strain.
Strain, Mary Jane (I293)

56 "Wliiam Armstrong and His Descendants" gives no birth date, year of birth 1853.
The date in the 1901 Census is 24 Oct 1856, which is not consistent with his
sister Elizabeth being born in Aug 1856.

!BIRTH: 1901 Census of Canada; ; ; ; , Winnipeg Public Library, 251 Donald St.,
Winnipeg, ManitobaOfficial enumeration date 31 Mar 1901.Ontario, Grey South

Armstrong, Mark (I086)

57 'Big Jim' was in his usual haunt... one of the bars up the 'Valley', when he was accosted b y a hard-drivin' lumberjack. Jim was losing the battle when his brother, Paddy, stepped i n to save the day.. He clipped the suspenders of the unspecting lumberjack, causing the poo r man to lose his drawers, among other things, and saved the day for Big Jim. The fellow wa s never again seen in the bars of the valley. Dougherty, James Arthur (I268)

58 'Marriages' page near the end of "William Armstrong and His Descendants" give
the name "Betty Louise (Moffatt) Mawhinney".
Moffatt, Betty Louise (I217)

59 1841 Census at Newbigging Village, Auchtertool, Fife : Alexander Shand (78), householder, Lillias Shand (77) and Janet Shand (40). Alexander Shand and his wife Lillias Watt are buried under a stone in Auchtertool churchyard. Shand, Alexander (I0055)

60 1851 Census at The Green, Hempnall. Farm Labourer. Tooke, William (I0823)

61 1881 Census age 8 mo., with notation 'Aug.' presumably indicating month of
birth. Name is 'Wilfred' on the census, not 'Frederick' as given in 'William
Armstrong and His Descendants'.

Date of birth and middle initial A. are taken from the index to Ontario births,
registration number 008440, registration year 1880. Birth record should be on
reel 1845398 at the Family History Center.

Not listed with Nathaniel Campbell in 1901 census, so probably had left home by
then.

There is no Wilfred Campbell born in 1880 in the US Social Security Death
Index, suggesting that he may have died before 1962, when the computerization
of records began.

Campbell, Wilfred A. 'Fred' (I061)

62 1881 Census at 6, Canton Street, Everton, Liverpool. Edward was a Cotton Broker. Born Carlisle, aged 35.
In 1881 at No.4 Canton Street lived Agnes Johnston (head), widow, aged 62 (annuitant) born in New Bickkin, Cumberland. Also at No.4 was her son Robert James Johnston, aged 26, a commercial traveller, born in Liverpool.
Jackson, Edward Backhouse (I0140)

63 1900 Brooklyn, NY address 383 Pacific (lodger) census she gave her date of birth as June, 1823, West Indies. Her parents were also born in the West Indies, according to the information she gave the census taker. Bootle, Charlotte (I1019)

64 1901 Census gives birth date 21 Jan 1895 Armstrong, Ethel Marion (I104)

65 1901 Census gives birth date as 24 Mar 1868 Armstrong, Sophia (I090)

66 1901 Census gives date of birth as Feb. 1851; Maggie Comley's Birthday Book
gives date as 2-12. Thus birth date is assumed to be 12 Feb 1851. However,
none of the ages given in various censuses agree with this birthdate: 18 in
1871, 28 in 1881, 49 in 1901. Also, this date makes him older than his older
brother John. It seems more reasonable to assume his year of birth was actually
1853. This also agrees with marriage record (see below) which has him 26 yrs
old on 15 Sep 1879.

1881 Census: age 28, profession Carder

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marriage record (viewed at Family History Centre in Winnipeg, reel 1869504,
record no. 003142) gives

age: 26

residence when married: Erin Village, Ont.

place of birth: Erin Village, Ont.

profession: woolen manufacturer

There is a town of Erin in Wellington Co, ON, northwest of Guelph. This
birthplace conflicts with the entry "Bruce" (presumably Bruce Co.) on the 1901
census.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following quarter-sections southwest of Alsask, SK are recorded as having
been homesteaded by Nathaniel Campbell in the Western Lands Database. These are
just over the Alberta border.

NE 23 26 1 W4

Liber 778, Folio 251, File reel number C-6560

Name: Nathaniel Campbell

SE 23 26 1 W4

Liber 847 ,Folio 94, File reel number C-6616

SW 24 26 1 W4

Liber 745, Folio 494, File reel number C-6533

Name: Nathaniel Mervyn Campbell

NW 24 26 1 W4

Liber 571, Folio 13, File reel number C-6391

Name: Nathaniel Campbell

Probably unrelated is a quarter-section in Manitoba, near Lake Manitoba at Big
Sandy Point (east of Alonsa).

NW 4 21 10 W1

Liber 714, Folio 140, File reel number C-6507

Name: Nathaniel Campbell

---------------------------------------------------------------------

In addition to farming, Nathaniel operated the local Post Office out of his
home. He designated the PO as 'Nathella'. The "Post Offices and Postmasters"
database at ArchiviaNet lists the Nathella post office in the Federal electoral
district of Medicine Hat, AB, with Nathaniel Campbell appointed as postmaster
1915-01-01 until 1918-05-31, when the office was closed. The location of the
office was 24-26-1-W4.

This region of Alberta is known as Acadia (Acadia Valley Municipal District). A
local history called "Times to Remember" has been published for this area, but
apparently does not mention the Campbells.

Nathella is listed in an Alberta place names index
(http://www.rootsweb.com/~canab/places/placesn.html) in Acadia County,
24-26-1-W4.

Also listed on page 572 of Wrigley's 1922 Alberta Directory and Year Book:

"a farming settlement and former P.O. in Alexandra Prov. Elec. Div., 10 miles
southwest of Alsask, which is on the C.N.R. main line and is the nearest C. N.
Tel., C. N. R. express and business and banking centre."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Nathaniel Campbell is listed in Edmonton Cemetery, Section I, Block 76, Plot
0006. In plot 0005 is Margaret Campbell. Apparently there is a single
headstone, with "Nathaniel 1852-1928" and "Margaret Jane 1857-1934" (and also a
note of some kind about "Nathaniel Mervin", not clear if he is buried there).
However, interment dates are 12/21/35 for Margaret and 12/14/54 for Nathaniel.
The year 1935 may be a transcription error, but the 1954 date seems to imply
that Nathaniel was moved here from some other cemetery.
