- worked as Engineer/ Fitter at Blackford Hill Royal Observatory in Edinburgh and then as a laboratory technician at Nuclear Physics Dept. Edinburgh University, Kings Buildings, Edinburgh. Cigarette smoker for most of his life, this was a contributory factor in his comparatively early death. He was fairly overweight and balding from his twenties. He had few hobbies or interests, tending to stay at home and watch TV after his work. He was rarely off work. He had a back problem and lay on a board to cure it for about ten weeks in his early fifties. He went to Knox Academy in Haddington, Morningside Primary in Edinburgh, and Darroch Secondary School. He left school with only a certificate in technical drawing and went to work in a surgical instrument shop near the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh at sixteen. He then got an apprenticeship at Ferranti Engineering in Robertson Avenue in Edinburgh. He became a metalworker and technician. He was about 5 foot eight inches and around 13 stone. He had a round face type and black hair which went grey around the fringes. His first car was a Ford Prefect, his second a Ford Cortina, his third a Ford Escort and his fourth a Peugeot 309.
