Notes - Worked as a Grocer and then a publican. Started with a hand cart and then had a vegetable shop in Leith Walk in Edinburgh. Moved to Haddington and had a pub called the Gardener`s Arms. Born illegitimate, with birth certificates in both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Apparently born in Glasgow and taken as a baby to be brought up by a widow in Edinburgh. The widow was Christine Dewar who lived at 59, Broughton Street, Edinburgh. In 1871 Christine was 45 years old and had five children of her own, and had three male lodgers aged 20-24. James B.McKemmie was one year old, his place of birth was Edinburgh and he was described as a "boarder" in the 1871 Census. The address of James Burns McKemmie`s mother was given as 181, Hospital Street, Glasgow.
