  He was a shepherd in 1866. He was married at Newton Parish Church (about 6 miles south-east of Edinburgh). At that time he was a shepherd for John Wauchope, Esquire, on nearby Edmonstone Farm. She was from Deanston village in Kilmadock Parish, South Perthshire ( about 5 miles north-west of Stirling).
