Notes |
- From William Armstrong and his Descendants:
"Margaret Armstrong was the second daughter of William and Margaret Armstrong
and was born and raised in Markdale. She was married to Nathaniel Campbell and
the couple resided for some time in Flesherton where Mr. Campbell carried on
operations in the woolen mill business, and subsequently at Wiarton, Thornbury
and Barrie. While residing in the latter place, Mr. Campbell decided to take
up farming in the Canadian West and settled at Alsask, Saskatchewan, where his
family joined him after the completion of settlement duties. After the death
of Mr. Campbell in 1926, the family moved to Calgary where they resided until
Mrs. Campbell's death.
"Mrs. Campbell was a lifelong Methodist, and later member of the United Church.
She died at the home of her daughter, Nathella, Mrs. M. L. Seller, at Edmonton
when on a visit at Christmas. 'Her qualities of mind and heart endeared her to
husband, children, sisters, and brothers.'"
According to Margaret (Seller) Minogue, Margaret Jane died of pneumonia at the
age of 76, and is buried in Edmonton Cemetery.
The City of Edmonton cemetery web page
(http://www.gov.edmonton.ab.ca/co
mm_services/rec_facilities/cemeteries/search.html) lists four Margaret
Campbells; the one buried Dec 21, 1935 is the only possible match. Dec 21 is
reasonable, but 1935 is two years late - maybe a transcription error.
Maggie Campbell's Birthday Book indicates her birthday was Dec 18, year not
specified.
Age in censuses: 1871 - 13, 1881 - 23, 1901 - 43. These ages suggest 1857 as
the year of birth. Also consistent with marriage record (see below).
1901 Census states she was born Dec 1856; but this is impossible if her sister
Elizabeth's birthdate is correct.
----------------------------------------
Headstone (see notes for Nathaniel) says "Margaret Jane 1857-1934".
Obituary is in The Edmonton Journal of December 20,1934 - states she died Dec
19, 1934, and lists children Helen of Calgary, Mrs. M.L. Seller of Edmonton,
J. Herbert of Calgary, N. Mervin of Edmonton and Wilfred A. of Rochester, N.Y.
[This thanks to Cheryl Maxwell - I haven't seen the obit myself.]

Margaret (Seller) Minogue has a vase or bowl inscribed "To M.J.C. from N.C.,
Sept 15, 1879".
