Notes - James Aikenhead of the firm of Aikenhead and Crombie , hardware merchants, was born in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1817, being fourth in a family of eleven children. His father, Thomas Aikenhead, was born in Kilkenny; he was a bookseller and stationer , and died in 1859. His mother was Eliza Beal, born in Thomastown, County Kilkenny; she died in her native country. Mr. Aikenhead learned the trade of a cabinetmaker and worked at it for ten years; then he learned the hardware business from his uncle's establishment in Kilkenny. In 1849 he came to Canada and settled in Toronto, where he became employed in the establishment of Ridout, Bros, Inc. He afterwards became a partner in the business with Joseph and Percival Ridout and A.T. Crombie. The Ridouts eventually retired, leaving the business in the hands of Messrs. Aikenhead and Crombie. In 1858, Aikenhead was married to Eliza, daughter of Robert Higginbotham.
