Marriage on October 2, 1862, at 182, Stirling Road, Glasgow, between James Burns, mercantile Clerk, aged 22. His address was 270, Parliamentary Road, Glasgow. His father was Robert Burns, a mercantile clerk. His mother was Jane Burns( M.S. Balloch) and she was deceased at the time of the marriage. James Burns married Janet McKemmie, aged 24 of 182, Stirling Road, Glasgow. Her father was James McKemmie, a publisher, and her mother Janet McKemmie ( M.S. Fullerton). Witnesses were Margaret McKemmie and David Burns.
Death Certificate : October 29, 1863, Death of Janet Burns, married to James Burns (colliery salesman). She was 25. Notes:
Worked as a Grocer and then a publican. Started with a hand cart and then had a vegetable shop in Leith Walk in Edinburgh. Moved to Haddington and had a pub called the Gardener`s Arms. Born illegitimate, with birth certificates in both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Apparently born in Glasgow and taken as a baby to be brought up by a widow in Edinburgh. The widow was Christine Dewar who lived at 59, Broughton Street, Edinburgh. In 1871 Christine was 45 years old and had five children of her own, and had three male lodgers aged 20-24. James B.McKemmie was one year old, his place of birth was Edinburgh and he was described as a "boarder" in the 1871 Census. The address of James Burns McKemmie`s mother was given as 181, Hospital Street, Glasgow.

worked as Engineer/ Fitter at Blackford Hill Royal Observatory in Edinburgh and then as a laboratory technician at Nuclear Physics Dept. Edinburgh University, Kings Buildings, Edinburgh. Cigarette smoker for most of his life, this was a contributory factor in his comparatively early death. He was fairly overweight and balding from his twenties. He had few hobbies or interests, tending to stay at home and watch TV after his work. He was rarely off work. He had a back problem and lay on a board to cure it for about ten weeks in his early fifties. He went to Knox Academy in Haddington, Morningside Primary in Edinburgh, and Darroch Secondary School. He left school with only a certificate in technical drawing and went to work in a surgical instrument shop near the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh at sixteen. He then got an apprenticeship at Ferranti Engineering in Robertson Avenue in Edinburgh. He became a metalworker and technician. He was about 5 foot eight inches and around 13 stone. He had a round face type and black hair which went grey around the fringes. His first car was a Ford Prefect, his second a Ford Cortina, his third a Ford Escort and his fourth a Peugeot 309.
